SZE's Experiment: Stepping Across Diverse Fields of Art Fearlessly - Media and Materials

Updated: Jan 15

Proceeding to adhere conventional art forms was my belief during the start of my art journey, potentially because of the absence of experience in exploring other divine art applications. Frankly speaking, it is because I lacked the knowledge to explore new methods, and I had never ventured beyond the boundaries I had set for myself. It is such a shame to restrict the future outcomes for my artworks that they could have originally achieved, however, the circumstance changed when a step that seems unimportant yet the bravest and the most significant decision was made. A handful of precious inspirations as my powerful fuel had managed to boost my confidence once again, since noticing the beauty and integration of an artwork as various art fields overlapped with each other, for instance, media, performance art, to name a few. And that what makes it not cooler when I was determined to transform my art into a form of video, just like the others have done and shared to the internet?

-The Heart

My project – The Heart, provided the satisfaction to me regardless of the number of difficulties I had encountered, as my aim to explore the unfortunate experience of people faced in their lives remained throughout the project by establishing a temporary channel for which people could express. During the early stage, I was required to consider the design and the material of the costume whether it has a physically aesthetic look that is capable to attract people, and, more importantly, is the surface suitable for writing? Can it fit me and is still wearable if standing over hours? To who was just starting in the design field, although I was nearly drown by questions and self-dialogues punishing every design I submitted, they could ultimately indicate an explicit direction to the result you craved. In my case, I had chosen acrylic board for firm texture and unreal visual effects, but same as many other designs, certain drawbacks would appear following by some decision making, and therefore it was doomed heavier yet had slightly eliminated by the adaptation of sponge attached to the shoulder areas. My advice to you is to prioritise subjects, having understanding to your ability and your list of wants.

-The making of the model.

After passing my blueprints to a modelling production company where pieces were cut out and reunited by tensol under supervision and facilitation, it was then time for planning and filming where there were several facts that I must accept. Since bringing imagination to meet reality is challenging, particular when implementing shooting in public area. The lesson I learned was to adapt to various situations, both favourable and poor. While it was raining, and occasionally few sounds of thunder stroked upon me and my friend who was helping, plus the troubles on setting up the venue, we weren’t pretty much happy at first. As it continued to develop, it was even too awful to accept that I had met a stranger who abominated my idea and shouted at me. As a creator, you may feel vulnerable and insecure when dealing with random events that happen during your project. From experiencing moments of doubt and uncertainty, to coping with comment and judgement, but as simple as a girl whispering into my ear and attempting to cheer me up, had genuinely melted away my negative thoughts. It is normal to encounter ups and downs, however, the way you react to them is what truly matter. To embrace the facts and view things unique and creatively as I did to appreciate how impressive to be able to engage and collect different reactions from people, as well as to get familiar with the unstable current that could occur and alter your plan if needed, it would surprisingly lead to your project some interesting effects.

-A person writing on my costume about the most unhappy event she has been through.

Stepping out of comfort zone is never easy. If you were to enquire the reason of why didn’t I quit during my project, the answer to it is belief. Once you established a strong idea that is undestroyable in mind, you become who is responsible for retaining it and seeking for a way to have it expressed. That is Art. It is the desire that hope to be comprehended empowers you to come across unknowns, and no fears shall enter while you are madly focusing on the subject you are passion for. Thumbs up to those who are struggling to create wonderful art. You are all capable and brave.
